Birthday Crowns

This year I have quite a few "spring babies" in my class. We've been celebrating birthdays every week (with more to come) and enjoying cupcakes, birthday cookies, and singing our birthday song both with and without the optional "cha-cha-cha's." With smiles and vigorous nods, I've so enjoyed kiri8's latest post at Elbows, Knees, Dreams, "Cha Cha Cha" and Halpey's post about his own students' crowning glory over at Look At My Happy Rainbow.

Birthdays are special. Crowns are cool. Don't forget they also come in handy for Fairy Tale Dress Up Days or other academic and fun-time celebrations, story retellings and imaginary play!

You can purchase pre-made crowns or make your own. Many teachers allow their students to decorate their crowns using construction paper, markers, paint, stickers, and foamies, but I also like to add fiesta fringe or holiday sparkle garland when my Stars want that little something *extra*:

My students choose the color of construction paper, fiesta fringe, scraps of wallpaper or scrapbooking paper that they'd like to use, though they also really enjoy using magazine clippings of their favorite toys, foods, or pictures.

I use one of the large rectangular pieces of paper (12X18?) for the crown with a bit extra stapled at the back for size adjustment. I fold up the bottom long edge of the paper twice to made the headband...

...and then fold the crown in half, cutting off the top edge. Girls tend to like the wavy top, while boys like the sharp pointy edges a la Max in Where the Wild Things Are:

Cut out shapes and designs, adhere stickers, and glue everything to the construction paper, stapling or hot gluing the fiesta fringe/garland along the bottom edge (**hint** staple the fiesta fringe or size-extender so that the prongs of the staples come through the front of the crown, NOT the inside where they can scratch your student's forehead):

Don't forget the birthday boy's or girl's name and new age:

...and watch your student beam with pride as s/he is recognized throughout the school as the special Birthday Student!

Happy Birthday Dear Husband

Happy Birthday Dear Husband- though I couldn't get the pre-schooler to sing the "Happy Birthday Song" on camera, I did catch him singing about purple dragons and spiders as he looked through a book about animals:

A Very Vera Birthday...

...for fifteen-year-old Dearest Daughter:

Have I mentioned her favorite color is purple? Purple Punch it *had* to be!

Miss Hello Kitty has been a favorite for years, and *look*! Kitty rings to keep!

The pre-schooler "fooed" the candles out before Big Sister got to them, so we had to re-light them and try again:

Vera, Vera, Vera... good thing Mom, Dad, and Grammy enjoy feeding this addiction!

A Birthday Girl Can Dream, Right?

It will be a mostly homemade Christmas this year thanks to being bitten by the crafting bug and Dear Daughter wanting to "help make things," not to mention the fact that I actually get nauseated when I see the price tags on gift items that this year, seem so wasteful and unnecessary. But for my upcoming thirty-ninth birthday (12/23), I'm all for fun, silliness and a little shopping in celebration of the birth of little ol' *me*. Indulgent. Selfish. Whatever. A birthday girl can dream, right?

Here's what has caught my eye and made me smile:

~ First, a Hello Kitty "Tapper:"

I remember loving Hello Kitty when I was a little girl, and though the HK gene seems to have been passed on to Dear Daughter, little touches of Sanrio still brighten my day.

~ Next, stainless steel shredding scissors from the Container Store:

Nope, I wouldn't use them to shred receipts, mail, or private documents (I've got the big paper shredder for all of that) but goodness, they'd be perfect for crafting!

~Since I plan to continue blogging, my eMac, while trustworthy and faithful, really is an awkward ton of bricks when it comes to finding a place to situate myself regularly. Should a seventeen inch MacBook Pro sashay its way through my door, you'll hear no complaints from me. In fact, you'll hear shrieks and screams of joy. And then silence as I immerse myself in all its Mac Goodness:

~ Another gift that would keep me quiet? A subscription to Artful Blogging. Oh, it's wonderful to read, the photography is beautiful...and then I seek out the blogs featured online:

~ A gift card for foo-foo coffee would keep me from constantly mis-measuring my Coffeemate creamer in the morning...somehow I always pour too little, or far too much in my mug:

~ Several more tubes of Estee Lauder's High Gloss (lip gloss) in Berry would keep my lips chap-free and the perfect shade of pink for smiling at kindergartners all day:

~ A gift of Warm Vanilla Sugar shower gel and body cream would keep me clean and soft and smelling nummy:

~ A bag of Scrabble tiles for crafting (and spelling!) would be a great gift any time of year...Mother's Day, Arbor Day, Fourth of July...you get the picture:

~ and finally, world peace. No biggie.

Happy Birthday Munna

Sorry I broke your leg when you were... two and a half?

At least you got me back by giving me the chicken pox for my thirteenth birthday!

Happy 30th!
