Lions and Lambs

Discussing March weather before Spring Break began, my Super Stars could be heard judging conditions each morning as they entered from the chilly line outside, fingers crossed that it would be warm enough later for recess:

"We are soooooooo going to have a lamb day today."

"I'm grumpy.  I think it's lion-ing out there today, so we won't get to play outside."

Lamb Day.  Lion-ing.  Of course I enjoy eavesdropping and catching all of the verbiage.

Here's where I posted the lamb craft originally.

The lions were a quick shape review activity, using 11 X 11 orange squares, tan ovals, white circles, black triangles, and tan semi-circle ears.

Do you think the upper middle lamb resembles Bert?  Maybe it's just me.

Old Teacher, New Tricks: Freebie!

Here's a link to a mini-reader that my Stars asked to create, using some of our sight words and some fun words we've learned for the month:

They reminded me that they always like to 1) color a page and 2) illustrate the ending of the story, so you'll notice those pages don't include color clip art.  The first page of shamrocks leaves room below each one so that students can write numbers 1, 2, and 3.

Here's a link for a quick re-teach page for students that can be used at a word-work center.  It would also be easy to make enough copies for every student, then cut the strips apart, and use them daily as a quick cut/glue/read activity in their literacy journals.

Let me know what you think as it's my first *try* at sharing on Google Docs.

In Like Lambs...

Outdoor recess certainly makes the Stars feel that March is coming in like a lamb, so today we're making our construction paper and cotton ball lambs (though this is certainly a good pattern for the adult sheep too!):

The fluffy cloud is cut from a 9X12 piece of white construction paper, and the rectangular legs start out as 4 1/2X 2 pieces of black construction paper.

Students assemble the face first, gluing the ears, eyes, and pink nose onto the black construction paper, and then glue eight to ten fluffy cotton balls across the ears and forehead.  After cutting out a large cloud shape, they glue the face onto the cloud, cut triangles from the four leg pieces, and position them:

Pot of Gold Bulletin Board Project/Snuggle Sunday

Here's another pattern Jessica shared with me a few years back! For the large bulletin board accent, I folded a large piece of black construction paper in half and free-cut a cauldron/pot shape; cut a cloud shape out of a large piece of white, and cut two inch wide strips of red, orange, blue, green and purple for the rainbow connected between the two. Five yellow circles are the "gold" and I added some die cut shamrocks, some pre-printed leprechauns peeking out here and there, and "March" for fun! The students' projects include their answers to the prompt "If I caught a leprechaun..." along with some gold glitter on the "coins."

Make sure the rainbow stripes are glued down securely to the back of both the pot and the cloud, and add the coins, glitter and quote details to the front:

It's a snuggly kind of Sunday...the pre-schooler has adopted his sister's Hello Kitty pillow and Harley blankie and is curled up on the floor next to me as I blog. Something tells me it's time to head to the couch for some serious snuggling while Dear Husband makes pancakes for breakfast!

Saturday Fun

I was thrilled to wake up to this:

...especially after having worn flip flops one afternoon earlier this week! The colder weather helped inspire me to bring eggs and butter up to room temperature:

...because I have lounge duty at work this week. Apologies in advance to anyone who gave up homemade cookies for Lent, you *might* want to avoid the lounge on Monday and Friday!

After selling the last of my St. Patrick's Day banners, I'm in the mood to make a few more (I'll post photos of them tomorrow~ you can let me know if you'd like to make a purchase), but not before I show you how well my re-purposed card catalog has worked out for my ribbon stash:

Heaven, I'm in Heaven...

One casualty (actually, six): my Martha Stewart Ribbon boxes. I have three walnut and three seafoam green.

Let me know if you're interested in any or all of them~ I'm selling them for $6 each (though you might want to check with me about shipping cost first, just let me know your zip code) to happy crafters or teachers who might want to give them a good home! You can email me at: michaelek1(at)yahoo(dot)com. Once contacted, I'll send you my PayPal info for a quick transaction. I should be able to get the boxes in the mail to you on Monday or Tuesday.

I forgot to show you the silly lion/lamb display the Stars and I made for our art area (many thanks to former-colleague Jessica for the lamb pattern):

(The sentence strip reads "March comes in like a lion and goes out like...")

The wide eyed lambs make me smile!

March Mess

Don't mind the mess, we're just preppin' for March:
