They can definitely do more than they are doing, now. I am in Oklahoma and you know we're at the bottom of the barrel when it comes to salary. (I miss my TX $)
I've always said that primary teachers need to earn the most...they (we, you) have the most difficult job - teaching children to love learning. But as the article says, don't hold your breath for pay and whatnot to balance out appropriately. After all, people in this country give a lot of lip service to how important children are (yes???? to our future???), but unfortunately the truth is that we don't particularly care for the old, the poor, or the very young - the very young don't vote and they don't pay taxes. Let's cut some more essential children's programs!!!!
